Wondering How Load Shedding Affects your Computer?

Loadshedding and Your Computer

Your computer depends on a consistent power supply to stay on, but with the frequent load shedding we experience (obligatory Thanks Eskom!), we cannot depend on the mains supply. You may have wondered whether load shedding can damage your PC, and what you can do to protect yourself from the impact. As it turns out, a sudden loss of power, as experienced during load shedding, can damage both your data and your hardware. If you do not switch your computer off before a scheduled load shedding occurs, it can cause massive problems further down the road due to these factors: If the operating system is busy passing important data while power is lost, the sudden cut will corrupt the file. When you reboot, your operating system can trip up over this file and fail to boot. If you have an HHD hard drive, its the head-and-write head, which hovers over the spinning platters during operation, snaps back to a resting position when the power trips. If this happens often, the head arm will misalign over time, causing it to touch and scrape the platter surface. This develops into a head crash where the hard drive is effectively destroyed (thanks again, Eskom!). Don't think you are safe if you have SSD drives. It can also suffer catastrophic damage ranging anywhere from data corruption to total malfunction. Considering the above, it’s a good idea to invest in some anti-load shedding precautions. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) will allow you enough time to safely shut down your PC. Not only does it come equipped with a battery that will continue to provide power to your computer, but it is also fitted with surge-protected outlets. This means your computer will be protected when the power surges when it comes back on. An inverter solution is a longer-term solution and allows you to run essential electronic equipment without the risk of damaging the unit or the inverter in the process, for a set period of time. DC UPS solutions also enable you to run your fibre box and router during load shedding. We have a wide range of inverters and UPS devices that will keep your devices safe and running during load shedding and other power outages. Chances are your devices already took a beating quite a few times, don't wait until it packs up completely
